Wait Until You Hear What Happened: Patrick Mahomes's College Years: From [College] to the NFL

NFL Sports

Before he was a Super Bowl champion, MVP, and the face of the NFL, Patrick Mahomes honed his incredible talents in the collegiate ranks. Hailing from Tyler, Texas, Mahomes wasn't always pegged as a generational football talent, having also excelled as a baseball pitcher. Ultimately, he chose to commit to Texas Tech University, where he would go on to rewrite the Red Raiders' record books and transform himself into the quarterback we know today.

Mahomes' Red Raider Rise

Mahomes arrived in Lubbock as a raw but incredibly gifted athlete. While he briefly played baseball for Texas Tech, football quickly became his singular focus. He saw significant action as a true freshman in 2014, showcasing glimpses of his potential with his powerful arm and ability to extend plays. It was in his sophomore and junior seasons, however, that Mahomes truly blossomed. Under head coach Kliff Kingsbury's pass-heavy system, he put up eye-popping numbers, demonstrating an unparalleled ability to throw from any arm angle, make impossible throws, and improvise under pressure.

His junior year in 2016 was nothing short of spectacular. Mahomes led the nation in total offense (5,312 yards), passing yards per game (442.8), and total touchdowns (53), including an NCAA record-tying 734 passing yards in a single game against Oklahoma. He was a human highlight reel, often shrugging off defenders and unleashing rockets downfield with effortless flick-of-the-wrist throws. This period was crucial for his development, as he learned to process defenses at a high level while still maintaining his playground-like creativity.

Despite playing in a wide-open, pass-happy offense that sometimes led to questions about his NFL readiness, Mahomes's tape spoke volumes. His unique blend of arm strength, mobility, vision, and fearless playmaking convinced NFL scouts he was a special talent. His time at Texas Tech wasn't just about statistics; it was about evolving from a promising athlete into a fully-fledged quarterback whose potential seemed limitless, setting the stage for his eventual first-round selection by the Kansas City Chiefs and his meteoric rise in the professional league.
