Richland's New Head Coach Is 27: Why The Rest of Washington Should Be Worried

Hold up, Seattle hoops fam, you are NOT gonna believe this news coming out of the 4A state! Richland, our very own Washington powerhouse, made a move that's got everyone's heads spinning. The Bombers, fresh off a perfect championship season, officially named Will Burghardt as their new head coach, and get this: the dude is only 27 years old! This is a seismic shift for one of the most successful high school basketball programs in the state, right here in Washington. We're talking about a guy barely out of college taking the reins of a program that just DOMINATED.

The Youngest Bomber Boss Takes Command

Okay, so let's talk about Will Burghardt. He's not just new, he's making history, becoming the youngest head coach EVER for the Richland boys basketball program since way back in 1947. Think about that, man! The Bombers have had 30 head coaches in their entire run, and now they're handing the keys to a 27-year-old. That's a serious statement of trust from the school, and a massive vote of confidence for Burghardt. It speaks volumes about his potential. This isn't some rebuilding project either. We're talking about the reigning state champion, the state of Washington's No. 1 ranked team from the 2025-26 season. Taking over a program like this at such a young age comes with immense pressure, but also incredible opportunity to forge an even stronger legacy.

A Legacy of Dominance Meets a Coach Who Wins

And what a team he's taking over! Richland isn't just good, they're straight-up dominant. This past season, they put up a perfect 28-0 record, finishing as the undisputed No. 1 team in the final Washington 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings. They capped off their fourth straight season with 20-plus wins, snatching that Class 4A state championship trophy by taking down Gonzaga Prep, 63-49. That's not just winning, that's building a dynasty! Now, Burghardt isn't coming in cold. He's got three seasons under his belt as the head coach at Newport (OR), where he compiled an impressive 49-24 overall record. In his last year there, he led the Cubs to a 19-5 record and a deep playoff run in the OHSAA. So, the man knows how to win, even if he's young, and that's exactly what the Bombers expect.

The Emerald City Prepares for More Hoops Glory

This is huge for Richland, and honestly, for Washington high school basketball as a whole. A young, hungry coach taking over a reigning state champ? You know every team in the state is already looking at their schedules, trying to figure out how to stop this train. Will Burghardt's tenure is going to be one to watch. The Bombers are loaded, riding a wave of unprecedented success, and with a fresh, youthful perspective at the helm, the future looks incredibly bright here in the Emerald City. The bar is set sky-high, but if Burghardt’s track record is any indication, he’s ready to meet it. Get ready, folks, because this is going to be an exciting ride with serious implications for who wears the crown in Washington high school hoops!
