Sandy Alcantara's 0-2 May And What His Next Start Actually Means For The League

Holy smokes, you guys, did you SEE what went down on Saturday afternoon?! The Miami Marlins pulled off a absolute stunner against the Tampa Bay Rays, turning what looked like a total collapse into pure clutch. Now, all eyes are on Sandy Alcantara to seal the home series today, and believe me, after the month he just had, this game is HUGE.

Zuber's Five-Pitch Heroics: The Win That Saved A Series

Picture this: Marlins are up 4-1 heading into the ninth inning, feeling good. Then, their closer, Pete Fairbanks, who used to pitch for the Rays, just couldn't lock it down. He gave up two runs on 39 pitches, blowing the save, and suddenly, the game is on the brink. Bases loaded, everyone's holding their breath, right? Enter reliever Tyler Zuber. This dude steps onto the mound, and with just five pitches, including a wicked 95-mph four-seam fastball, he strikes out the Rays' Junior Caminero! Game over. Marlins win 4-3, and the series is tied. You gotta love that kind of fight, especially after leading 4-1. It's the kind of gritty comeback that gets you hyped for the next one.

From Cy Young Glory To Trade Deadline Buzz

So now it's Sandy Alcantara's turn, and man, there's a lot riding on this for the 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner. This dude was the unanimous pick back then, a total ace. But 2026 has been a bit of a roller coaster. He's sitting at 4-4 with a 4.59 ERA overall, and May was rough, like, *really* rough. We're talking 0-2 with a 7.39 ERA in five starts for the 30-year-old Dominican hurler. Ouch. But then he had a solid rebound on Monday against the Washington Nationals, allowing only three runs, including a two-run shot to Jacob Young, over seven innings in a 7-3 win. He fanned five and walked nobody, showing that old form. The league's watching because Alcantara has a club option for 2027, making him a prime candidate to be moved at the trade deadline. He's just trying to pitch, though. He told us he liked "how aggressive I was in the game. Since the first inning. I know I gave up a homer in the second inning, but that doesn't matter to me." He even has a 0.00 ERA in his one career start against the Rays this season, allowing one unearned run over six innings on May 16, a game the Marlins won 10-5 in extra innings.

Rays Are Wary, And Jax Is Struggling

The Rays know this Marlins squad is streaky. Manager Kevin Cash straight up said, "They have tough hitters with good approaches and good team speed." Miami leads the majors with 72 stolen bases! Cash is hoping his catcher Nick Fortes can throw them out. The Marlins had a brutal five-game losing streak, including a sweep by the Mets in late May, but then they turned around and swept Washington. The Rays themselves have been in a bit of a skid, going 2-8 recently, but Cash says their clubhouse attitude is "fantastic." On Saturday, Tampa Bay only managed five hits, with Yandy Diaz grabbing three to push his average to .326. Their starter today, Griffin Jax, isn't coming in hot either. The right-hander (1-4, 4.76 ERA) got shelled his last time out, giving up six runs on seven hits in just four innings against the Detroit Tigers, including dingers to Dillon Dingler, Kerry Carpenter, and Riley Greene. So, here we are, game three of the series. The Marlins are looking to finish it at home, riding that wild Saturday win. Alcantara has a chance to show the league he's still an ace despite that tough May, maybe even boosting his trade value. Can he deliver? You know we'll be watching!
