Seahawks Landing Dante Fowler Jr. on One Year Deal, Beefing Up Edge Rush

The Seahawks are bringing in veteran edge rusher Dante Fowler Jr. on a one year deal, according to reports out of UPI Sports on May 5. This is a move that signals Mike Macdonald's defensive front office is serious about adding proven pass rush talent to complement what they're building in Seattle this offseason.

Filling a Need on the Edge

Fowler Jr. brings experience and productivity to a Seattle defense that lost some key contributors this offseason. The one year contract gives the Seahawks flexibility while also bringing in a player who knows how to get to the quarterback. For a defense trying to establish itself under Macdonald's system, adding a veteran presence on the edge makes sense. The deal is low risk and gives both sides a chance to evaluate fit without long term commitment.

Building Around Sam Darnold

With Sam Darnold under center and the receiving corps featuring Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Rashid Shaheed, and Cooper Kupp, the Seahawks offense has weapons. Now the defense needs to hold up its end of the bargain. Fowler Jr. joining the pass rush rotation gives the Seahawks another layer of protection for Darnold when he has the ball, because getting him clean looks downfield depends on keeping opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable.

What's Next

This signing is one piece of what looks like a full roster evaluation by the Seahawks brass. Fowler Jr. will compete to make an impact during the regular season, and fans will get their first real look at how he fits into Macdonald's defense once games start mattering. The edge rusher market is always competitive, so landing a veteran on a one year prove it deal is the kind of smart roster management that can pay dividends if Fowler Jr. stays healthy and productive.
