Toppenish Dynasty Reigns Supreme, Montiel Makes History at WIAA Mat Classic XXXVII

The mats of the Tacoma Dome were alight with an electrifying display of grit and glory this past Saturday, February 21, 2026, as the WIAA Mat Classic XXXVII delivered unforgettable moments and historic achievements. Leading the charge, Toppenish High School's wrestling powerhouse solidified its legendary status, particularly on the girls' side. Senior sensation Adalyne Montiel etched her name into the history books, securing her monumental fourth individual state championship, a truly rare and coveted feat in Washington State prep wrestling. Her incredible individual triumph headlined a dominant performance by the Toppenish girls, who collectively seized their astonishing fifth consecutive team championship title. This unprecedented run solidifies Toppenish as a true dynasty in Washington high school wrestling, a testament to years of unwavering dedication, exceptional coaching, and pure athletic prowess.

Valley Dominance Continues

While Montiel's four-peat captivated fans and the entire wrestling community, the wave of dominance from the Yakima Valley extended far beyond Toppenish's girls. On the boys' side, Toppenish 2A also celebrated another wrestling titan, Justyce Zuniga, who claimed his own remarkable fourth individual state title. In the final minute of a dominant career built around a fast pace virtually no one could match, Zuniga finally slowed down, savoring his hard-earned victory. The Toppenish boys' team finished a strong second place in the fiercely competitive 2A classification, showcasing the program's incredible depth across both genders and their consistent ability to produce champions.

The 1A classification saw the Wapato boys' squad once again prove their mettle, successfully defending their team championship title. Built from a foundation of disciplined training and strategic depth, Wapato leaned on its strong roster to hold off a persistent Zillah team, which finished as the runner-up and boasted three individual state champions of their own. Over in the 2B division, Granger boys battled fiercely to narrowly claim the team title, securing a crucial pair of individual championships. Their triumphant performance demonstrated a program on the rise, ready to challenge the state's best and leaving no doubt about their strength.

Granger Girls Shine Bright

The girls' 1A/2B combined classification also brought thrilling action and inspiring stories of perseverance, with Granger High School's girls' team securing an impressive runner-up finish. Their success was powered by a trio of outstanding individual performances that highlighted the depth of talent in the lower classifications.

• Senior Gabrielle Berger capped her high school career in style, earning a repeat individual state title, a testament to her consistent excellence and relentless drive.
• Sonia Mendoza, another dedicated senior, finally captured the state championship she had been relentlessly pursuing for four years, a moment of pure triumph and emotional release.
• Not to be overlooked, freshman Vanessa Torres burst onto the scene with a state title in her inaugural Mat Classic appearance, immediately launching her bid for what could become an extraordinary, multi-year championship career.

These young athletes truly represent the heart and soul of Washington State prep wrestling, pushing boundaries, setting new standards, and inspiring future generations with their commitment to excellence. As the echoes of cheering fans fade from the Tacoma Dome, the achievements of these dedicated student-athletes will resonate throughout the state, fueling the passion for another thrilling season of Washington high school wrestling.
