Toppenish Girls' Fifth Straight Mat Classic Title: The Unstoppable Dynasty That Defines Washington Wrestling

Alright, Emerald City, let's talk about the raw power we witnessed down in the Tacoma Dome! The WIAA Mat Classic XXXVII hit different this year, and what a show it was. February 21, 2026, was a day for the history books, with 113 medalists from our own Valley putting on a clinic. But the biggest, most unbelievable news? Toppenish's girls team did it again, snatching their fifth straight team championship! Seriously, a dynasty is being forged right before our eyes, and the Tacoma Dome was buzzing with it.

Montiel Makes History, Toppenish Girls Are Unstoppable

You wanna talk about legends? Adalyne Montiel from Toppenish etched her name into the wrestling record books, grabbing her fourth individual state title at Mat Classic XXXVII. Think about that: FOUR titles! It’s insane! She wasn't alone in her greatness, though. The Toppenish girls squad went out and secured their program's fifth consecutive team championship. This isn't a lucky streak; this is pure, dominant excellence. Celebrating a fourth individual title and a fifth straight team title felt different for Montiel, the reports say, and I bet it did! Other teams in the state have to be wondering how to even come close to this.

Boys' Brackets Bring the Heat: Wapato, Granger, and Another Four-Timer

The boys' side of Mat Classic XXXVII was just as wild, showcasing incredible depth and individual brilliance. Wapato's boys squad, built from the bottom up, once again reigned inside the circles, defending their 1A team title. Talk about heart! Their rivals, Zillah, were runner-up again, but made their mark with three individual winners. Over in 2B, Granger's boys claimed a pair of individual titles and narrowly snatched the 2B team title too. What a battle! But we gotta shine a massive spotlight on Toppenish's Justyce Zuniga. This guy led his Toppenish boys team to a second-place 2A finish, and secured his fourth individual title. A fourth title! Zuniga's career has been described as dominant, built around a fast pace almost no one could match. Two four-time individual champions in one Mat Classic? Unbelievable! The Tacoma Dome crowd loved it.

Granger Girls Show Up Strong with Three Champs

Let's not forget the Granger girls, who made a massive statement, claiming a runner-up finish in the 1A/2B category. They did it with a trio of phenomenal individual winners! Gabrielle Berger went out in style, grabbing a repeat title. Sonia Mendoza finally got the title she'd been chasing for four years, a moment that had to be pure gold for her. And then there’s freshman Vanessa Torres, who launched her bid for the rarest of all prizes. A freshman already showing she has what it takes? The future is incredibly bright for these athletes, and for Washington wrestling as a whole. This group showed grit, determination, and serious talent. What a spectacle Mat Classic XXXVII was! We saw dynasties continue, new stars emerge, and incredible individual achievements that will be talked about for years. For teams like Toppenish, Wapato, and Granger, the challenge now is to keep that momentum going and defend those titles. For individual champs like Montiel and Zuniga, their legacies are cemented. And for those like freshman Torres, the sky's the limit for what they can achieve. The bar has been set incredibly high for next year's Mat Classic, and you know we'll be watching every match. The Emerald City always supports its champions!
