Toppenish Just Forged an Unbreakable Dynasty, and Nobody in Washington Is Ready For It

Alright, Seattle, if you missed the absolute 🔥 fire that went down at the Tacoma Dome this past Saturday, February 21, 2026, you seriously messed up! The WIAA Mat Classic XXXVII wasn't just another wrestling tournament, it was a full-blown coronation, a display of raw power and grit that cemented some serious legacies. We're talking about state championships being defended, four-time champs etching their names into history, and teams just flat-out dominating. The Emerald City always loves a winner, and man, did Tacoma deliver on that front! It's clear that the future of Washington wrestling is bright, and these young athletes are showing us exactly what dedication looks like.

Montiel's Mountaintop Moment and Toppenish's Unstoppable Reign

You wanna talk about making a statement? Toppenish girls wrestling just dropped the mic so hard the Dome is still vibrating. Adalyne Montiel, a name you absolutely need to remember, secured her FOURTH individual title at Mat Classic XXXVII. Think about that for a second. Four times! That's not luck, that's pure, unadulterated skill, relentless dedication, and a winner's mentality. And she wasn't alone! Her squad grabbed four individual girls titles total, a true testament to their depth and coaching, propelling Toppenish to their FIFTH straight team championship. Fifth! That's not just a run, that's a dynasty, folks. Seriously, who's gonna stop them next year? The reports say their celebration even felt "a little different than expected." When you've achieved that much, what's left but to chase perfection?

Wapato, Zillah, and Granger: The Next Wave of Champions Emerge

But the Mat Classic wasn't just the Toppenish show. Over in the 1A boys' division, Wapato proved why they're built "from the bottom up," defending their team title with serious depth and heart. They just flat-out reigned inside those circles, showcasing consistent performance when it mattered most. Their rivals, Zillah, were right there again, snagging runner-up for the team title, but they did crown three individual winners of their own. You know that rivalry is already heating up for next year, especially after Wapato edged Zillah 39-36 in a regular season dual meet back in January 29, 2026. That kind of intense back-and-forth is what makes this sport so incredibly electric! The stakes are always sky-high when these teams meet. And let's not forget the 2B boys. Granger wasn't letting anyone forget their name either, narrowly clinching the 2B team title by claiming a pair of individual titles. Talk about clutch performances! On the girls' side for 1A/2B, Granger also finished as runner-up, powered by a truly impressive trio of winners: Gabrielle Berger, who went out in absolute style with a repeat title; Sonia Mendoza, who finally got the title she's been chasing for four years of relentless effort; and freshman Vanessa Torres, who just launched her bid for that rarest of prizes, already setting her sights high. This group is clearly building something special! So, what's next for these high school titans? While the Mat Classic XXXVII is officially in the books, the grind for next year starts now. These incredible athletes are already looking ahead, planning how to defend their hard-won crowns or finally snatch that gold they've been fighting for. The sheer talent, passion, and competitive fire on display at the Tacoma Dome was nothing short of insane, and it just proves that Washington high school wrestling is absolutely thriving. Get ready, because next year is going to be even bigger! You just gotta love seeing that kind of dedication and performance from our local athletes, making us proud!
