Two Wins Away, Vegas Is About To Be Crowned the Greatest Expansion Team in NHL History

Holy smokes, hockey fans, can you believe what we’re watching? The Vegas Golden Knights are just two victories shy of hoisting the Stanley Cup for the second time in four years, and if they do it, we’re not just talking about a great team. We’re talking about an expansion franchise that’s about to rewrite the record books and claim the title of the absolute best in NHL history. Seriously, is anyone else’s jaw on the floor?

Nine Seasons, Three Finals, Two Cups? Wild!

Think about it. This team, in just nine seasons, is in its third Stanley Cup Final. The buzz in Vegas is unreal, with lines for practice stretching outside the door. Hockey historian Eric Zweig isn't shy about it, putting Vegas squarely on the “short list” of top expansion franchises already. But get this: another Cup? That moves them right into the conversation for the GOAT. Zweig said it himself, it’s harder than ever to pull this off with a 32-team league and more playoff rounds than before. He even calls them “head and shoulders above” any other expansion team since the 90s. We’re talking about a team joining the company of legends like the Flyers, the Islanders, and Gretzky’s Oilers. That’s insane!

Mental Toughness and a Locker Room Full of Winners

What’s their secret sauce? Experience, baby. Brett Howden, who’s got a playoff-leading 13 goals and was on the 2023 Cup team, spilled the tea. He said the experience, leadership, and composure in that locker room “speaks volumes.” You’ve got guys like Mitch Marner, Rasmus Andersson, and Tomas Hertl still chasing their first Cup, and you can feel their hunger. Hertl, who nearly won it with San Jose in 2016, said he thought he’d “be right back” after that first run. Now, he’s two wins away and hoping to “finish this the right way.” We’ve seen their mental strength shine in this wild series against Carolina. They clawed back from a two-goal deficit in Game 1 and blew a four-goal lead in Game 3 only to win in double overtime. Coach John Tortorella said there was “no panic,” that the players “get it” and rely on that process. That’s not physical skill, folks, that’s all mental.

So, here we are. Game 4 is today in Las Vegas, with the Golden Knights up 2-1 on Carolina. A win puts them in a commanding position. This isn't just about another win, it’s about history. Will Vegas make good on Hertl’s hope and finish this series right, etching their name in the annals as the greatest expansion team ever? You bet your bottom dollar we’ll be watching every second!
