Victor Hedman Steps Away: Lightning Captain Addresses Mental Health During Playoff Run
Tampa Bay Lightning captain Victor Hedman announced Tuesday that his extended absence from the team was driven by a need to address his mental health. The 35-year-old defenseman missed the Lightning's final 15 games of the regular season and all seven contests in the playoffs, a significant stretch during a critical stretch for the franchise.
Hedman's decision to step back shows the kind of vulnerability that matters. The veteran blueliner recognized something needed attention and took care of it, rather than pushing through. That takes real strength, even if it meant sitting out during playoff hockey when every game counts and your team needs your best.

But Hedman's willingness to be open about mental health sends a message that sometimes the most important thing isn't suiting up. It's taking care of yourself first.
The Lightning will continue forward without him during this stretch, but his announcement underscores a growing awareness across sports that mental health is as critical as physical health. For Hedman, getting himself right is the priority right now, and the team will adjust accordingly.
