Vogt Out Again With Infection, Bench Coach Running Guardians for Second Straight Night

Stephen Vogt is stuck at home. The Cleveland Guardians manager will miss his second consecutive game Monday night due to a viral infection, meaning bench coach Tony Arnerich gets another night running the show when the Guardians host the Los Angeles Angels in the opener of a three-game series.

The good news? Vogt is feeling better and should be back in the dugout Tuesday night. Arnerich, who also happens to be Vogt's housemate in Cleveland, took the reins Sunday and will do it again Monday. And yes, he made a joke about it.

Arnerich Makes Light of the Situation

"He is on the second floor, and I'm in the basement," Arnerich said with a laugh. "If we lose again, I might be out on the lawn."

That comment came after the Guardians dropped their first game under emergency management, falling 5-4 to the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. Arnerich will be hoping for a different result Monday night against the Angels.

Vogt's Track Record Speaks for Itself

This is not some unknown manager running the ship, either. Vogt was the AL Manager of the Year in both 2024 and 2025, his first two seasons as a major league manager. That's back-to-back hardware in a league loaded with talent and pressure. The Guardians are clearly in good hands even with their skipper temporarily sidelined.

The hope is a quick turnaround and Vogt back in uniform Tuesday. For now, Arnerich will try to steady the ship and keep Cleveland competitive in this three-game set against Los Angeles.
