Wayne Gretzky's Autographed Card Hit $540,000, But Josh Allen's Latest Sale Is The Real Shocker

Alright, Seattle sports fanatics, gather 'round because the collectibles market just went absolutely wild, and we need to talk about it. You thought you'd seen everything when a truly iconic piece of hockey history, an autographed Wayne Gretzky rookie card, fetched a mind-blowing $540,000. That's a half-million dollars, folks, for a single card! But hold onto your hats, because what went down in the same auction for Josh Allen blew even that out of the water.

The Great One Still Dominates the Ice, Even On Cardboard

Let's dive into this Gretzky stunner first. We're talking about a 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky rookie card, certified by Professional Sports Authenticator, graded a solid nine, with his autograph nailing a perfect 10. This gem sold for $540,000, including the buyer's premium, at Fanatics Collect's May Premier Auction. Can you even believe it? This isn't just a big sale, it's the most ever spent on an autographed hockey card, period. The Great One's unsigned O-Pee-Chee rookie cards have already commanded insane prices, with four different PSA 10 copies hitting $720,000, $1.2 million, $1.29 million, and even a staggering $3.75 million since December 2020. But none of *those* had Gretzky's actual signature on them. Kevin Lenane, vice president of Fanatics Collect, put it perfectly, saying he'd "never seen one of these before, there's just one." He also dropped some serious truth, stating, "It doesn't seem like anyone could do what Gretzky did again either, I mean, he had more career assists than anyone else did points. As far as autographed hockey cards go, I don't see anything reaching this mountain." That's high praise for a legend, and the price tag backs it up.

Josh Allen's MVP Card Made the Collectibles World Explode

Now, if you thought $540,000 was wild, prepare yourselves. In that very same auction, Josh Allen's 1-of-1 numbered 2025 Topps Chrome Honors MVP card sold for an unbelievable $1.35 million. Yeah, you read that right. One point three five MILLION dollars! That completely shattered his previous record, which was a mere $288,000 for one of his cards. What made this Allen card so special? It's a 1-of-1, and it features an MVP-specific patch because his 2025 season uniforms, as the previous season's MVP, rocked golden NFL shields as part of Topps' award winner programs. Plus, it has an on-card autograph. Lenane from Fanatics Collect was pretty hyped, saying, "He's such an incredible quarterback, clearly one of the greats, so I don't totally understand [Allen being undervalued], but it's nice to see this total, that's a lot of money for a non-rookie card." He added, "It's truly a collector's card: An MVP-specific patch, on-card autograph, 1-of-1. It's hard to think of a card you'd want more than this one for Allen." This May has been a monster for Fanatics Collect, with Lenane confirming it's their most successful month ever, pulling in "north of $100 million." It just makes you wonder, doesn't it? What kind of insane numbers could a truly epic card from our own Mariners' Julio Rodriguez or our Kraken's Matty Beniers hit one day? Or even an MVP Sam Darnold card from the Seahawks? The market is scorching hot, and these record-breaking sales prove that sports collectibles are a serious game. What's the next massive sale going to be? We'll be watching, cheering for our guys, and dreaming of our own Emerald City legends reaching those wild heights!
