When you picture Cooper Kupp streaking downfield for the Los Angeles Rams, one image immediately comes to mind: his number 10 jersey. The dynamic wide receiver has become synonymous with that double-digit, especially after his record-breaking 2021 season and Super Bowl LVI MVP performance. But unlike some players who meticulously choose a number, Kupp's connection to 10 has a more practical, yet ultimately defining, origin story.
Why Kupp Kept Number 10
Kupp's affinity for the number 10 actually dates back to his collegiate days at Eastern Washington University, where he famously dominated FCS defenses while sporting the same digit. Upon entering the NFL draft in 2017, the league's jersey number rules for wide receivers were more restrictive than they are today. Receivers were typically limited to numbers between 10-19 or 80-89. Fortunately for Kupp, his preferred college number, 10, was available with the Rams, making the transition seamless and allowing him to maintain a familiar identity from the get-go.
Interestingly, the NFL significantly relaxed its jersey number rules in 2021, opening the door for wide receivers to wear single-digit numbers from 1-9 – a popular choice among many offensive playmakers. Despite this new freedom, Kupp opted to remain with number 10. By that point, he had already carved out a spectacular career, including a First-Team All-Pro selection, and was on the cusp of his historic Triple Crown season. The number had become ingrained in his personal brand and was quickly turning into a symbol of the Rams' championship aspirations. It simply felt right to continue building his legend with the number that brought him there.
Today, Cooper Kupp's number 10 isn't just a number; it's an emblem of consistency, dedication, and unparalleled success. From his college dominance to his Super Bowl heroics, the double-digit has been a constant companion, forever linked to one of the game's most incredible receiving talents.
