Can you believe it? Our Washington Huskies baseball squad, after fighting their way through a couple of clutch wins in the Big Ten Tournament, just had their season slammed shut by those Oregon Ducks. In Omaha, no less! A tough 9-4 loss to our arch-rivals on Saturday, and just like that, the Huskies' run is officially over. My heart's still sinking a little thinking about it, man.

Our Pitching Staff Couldn't Stop the Ducks From Going Yard

It's brutal, man. Even with Noah Kenney, our All-Big Ten Third Team honoree, on the mound, Coach Eddie Smith's pitching staff couldn't find their rhythm in Omaha. Kenney, who's usually so clutch, took the loss after giving up 5 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks over 4 hard-fought innings, plus he added 5 strikeouts. But the real gut punch? Those Oregon Ducks went absolutely OFF. They cranked FIVE solo home runs, man, five! Designated hitter Naulivou Lauaki, third baseman Drew Smith, first baseman Brayden Jaksa, center fielder Jack Brooks, and left fielder Gabe Miranda all took us deep into the Charles Schwab Field seats. You can't win a tournament game when the long ball is flying out of the park like that, even when they're all solo shots.

Ty Cowan's Grand Slam Wasn't Enough to Ignite the Batting Order

Meanwhile, our lineup couldn't match that firepower, couldn't keep pace with the Ducks' offensive explosion. We were able to muster 8 hits in the contest, but it felt like we were always playing catch-up, never quite getting that big rally we needed. The one moment of pure, unadulterated hype, though? Senior second baseman Ty Cowan, in the ninth inning, absolutely SMASHED a grand slam! His first career home run for UW, and it was a grand slam in the final inning of our tournament run. What a way to go out, personally, for him! But man, it was too little, too late for the team. Third baseman Blake Wilson was the only guy with multiple hits on the day, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. On the flip side, Oregon's pitcher, Cal Scolari, was dealing, grabbing the win after working 5 innings and giving up only 4 hits and 2 walks while punching out 10 of our hitters. The Ducks struck out 14 of our hitters in total throughout the game. So yeah, with that tough 9-4 loss, our Washington Huskies officially close out their season under Coach Smith and in the Big Ten with a 25-32 record. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, losing in the tournament, especially against our arch-rivals, the Oregon Ducks. We were hoping for a much deeper run in Omaha, a chance to really show what this team is made of. Now, it's back to the drawing board for Coach Smith and the squad. This hurts, it really does, but you know the Dawgs will be back next season, fighting harder than ever. We'll be cheering them on every single pitch, always. Go Dawgs!
