Georgia and Florida State Are Canceling Their Entire Series, and Conference Realignment Is to Blame

Georgia and Florida State just pulled the plug on a home-and-home series that was supposed to happen in 2027 and 2028. Both programs are out of room on their schedules, and you can thank the conference shuffle for that headache.

Why the Calendar Got So Crowded

Here's what happened: the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference both bumped their league schedules up to nine conference games. That's a massive change. When you go from eight to nine games, suddenly that non-conference matchup that looked easy to pencil in becomes a luxury nobody can afford. Georgia and Florida State couldn't find a way to make it work, so they just canceled the whole thing.

What This Means Going Forward

This is the kind of behind-the-scenes casualty that happens when conferences expand and reshuffle their calendars. Programs that had these games locked in are now stuck choosing between keeping them and fitting in more league obligations. Georgia and Florida State made their call: the SEC and ACC games matter more right now than keeping an old non-conference rivalry on the books.

It's a reminder of how much college football has changed in the last few years. The Power conferences are tightening their grips on the schedule, and the old rivalries and neutral-site matchups are getting squeezed out. Not every series survives that kind of pressure.
