Mt. Spokane Wildcats Seniors, Led by Ace Addison Jay, Charge Towards Elusive 3A State Softball Title

The dream of a state championship hangs palpably for the Mt. Spokane Wildcats fastpitch softball team, especially their formidable senior class. After a stellar 22-1 season, the second-seeded Wildcats are poised to make a deep run at the WIAA 3A State Tournament, seeking to cap their high school careers with a title that has eluded Greater Spokane League teams for two decades. Spearheading this quest is senior pitcher and hitter Addison Jay, a dominant force whose talent and leadership embody the team's fierce determination. Jay, alongside fellow seniors like catcher Quincy Schuerman and Kaydin Bradeen, is ready to leave everything on the field in Lacey.

Jay's Dominance and Team Resilience

Addison Jay's career at Mt. Spokane High School has been nothing short of legendary. Earning all-league first-team honors every GSL season, Jay has rewritten the record books, becoming the school's all-time leader in wins with 57 and surpassing 650 strikeouts. Coach Carl Adams describes Jay as "laser focused" since her freshman year, a consistent force who, despite her individual accolades, always deflects credit to her teammates. Catcher Quincy Schuerman, who has the best seat in the house for Jay's mastery, keeps her pitcher motivated with a simple, powerful message, "I just tell her that there is nobody better."

This senior-laden squad has proven its resilience time and again. After taking fourth in two of the past three 3A state tournaments, they faced an early upset last year, only to fight back and earn a trophy. Jay believes that experience taught them invaluable lessons. "To lose that game and still fight back to earn a trophy showed us how resilient this group was," Jay explained, highlighting how that mindset has carried over. A prime example came in the District 6 title game against Kennewick, where Schuerman knocked in Jay for the game-winning run in extra innings, showcasing the team's clutch performance and unwavering belief in one another.

A Senior Class Driven to Make History

The Mt. Spokane Wildcats are more than just a collection of talented individuals, they are a cohesive unit bound by years of hard work and shared ambition. The eight seniors, having invested countless hours, are acutely aware of this tournament's magnitude. "We’ve worked so hard over our careers and this year, and no one else at state knows how much work we have put in except for us," Jay passionately stated. This collective effort and trust are palpable, as Schuerman emphasizes, "We have a ton of confidence in one another, that if you have a terrible game a girl behind you is gonna have a great game and pick you up." This synergy allows them to play with a lightheartedness that belies their competitive fire.

Beginning Friday at 9 a.m. against either 18th-seeded Southridge or 15th-seeded Gig Harbor, the Wildcats will enter the WIAA 3A State Tournament with a target squarely on their backs as the No. 2 seed. But unlike last year's shock, Jay believes her team has the poise and strength to play loosely, knowing this is their final chance together. The journey of these dedicated young athletes, particularly this exceptional senior class, is a testament to their passion for Washington State prep sports. They are determined to make their mark.

The stage is set for Mt. Spokane to challenge for the ultimate prize, a 3A state championship, and etch their names into GSL history, potentially inspiring future generations of Wildcats.
