Oregon's Top Swimmer Is Coming To Washington State, And Our Home Grown Talent Is About To Get REAL

Okay, so listen up, Emerald City! While we're all dialed into the M's early season grind at T-Mobile Park and waiting for Sam Darnold and the Seahawks to hit Lumen Field, some major news dropped that's gonna make waves for our state's athletic future. We're talking about a serious talent boost coming to the great state of Washington, and folks, it's pretty darn exciting. Oregon High School State Champion Tessa Aberle has verbally committed to Washington State for Fall 2027! You heard that right, a state champion is headed our way, and that's something to get hyped about!

The Future Cougs Just Got a Star

Tessa Aberle, an absolute force out of Oregon, is bringing her championship pedigree across the border to Pullman. She's an Oregon High School State Champion, and locking down that kind of talent for our state's collegiate programs is huge. We're talking about a commitment for Fall 2027, so it's a bit of a wait, but it's clear WSU is building something special. This is the kind of early commitment that sets a tone, showing that Washington is a destination for top-tier athletes. It's not every day you see a state champ from a rival state choose one of our own, and that just makes it sweeter!

Swimmers Making Moves & Legends Hanging It Up

Beyond our state's exciting future, the competitive swimming world is always buzzing with action. We just saw Jaxon Bowshire, a runner-up in the platform event at the 2025 NCAAs, make a big transfer move to Michigan after two years at Texas A&M. This guy also snagged SEC Freshman Male Diver of the Year honors, so that's a significant shift in the collegiate landscape. On the international scene, some absolute legends are calling it a career. Bronte Campbell, a World Champion and World Record Holder and one of Australia's most successful women's sprinters, revealed her decision to retire. And get this, two-time Russian Olympic gold medalist Evgeny Rylov also announced his formal retirement from competitive swimming on Instagram. It's tough to see legends go, but their impact on the sport is undeniable.

Current Meets & New Faces On Campus

The action in the pool isn't slowing down either. At the 2026 Mel Zajac Jr. International Meet, Josh Liendo absolutely crushed it, winning the men's 50 freestyle in 22.50 on night two. He wasn't done, also grabbing 2nd in the 50 back. Over at the 2026 Longhorn Elite Invite, Regan Smith, fresh off a very strong performance in the women's 100 fly the night before, was set to swim two events on day three. And the college recruiting trail is hot: Florida State picked up Winter Juniors Qualifier Nicolas Lee for their 2027 class, while Winter Juniors Qualifier Dylan Stewart is verbally committed to Georgetown for Fall 2027. We even saw Florida High School State Finalist Elise Panna verbally commit to Dartmouth for Fall 2027, after dropping nearly a full second in both backstroke events and the 200 freestyle in the 2025-26 short course season.

Closing

So yeah, while we're cheering on Cal Raleigh's dingers and waiting for Sam Darnold to sling it, it's awesome to see top-level athletic talent choosing our state for their future. Tessa Aberle's commitment to Washington State is a massive win for the future of sports in our region. Keep an eye on these names as they develop. It’s always fun to watch incredible athletes do their thing, whether it’s in the water or on the field! We'll be watching!
