Road to Glory Begins: Sumner's Landon Meyer and Washington's Best Gear Up for WIAA Baseball State Tournament

The air crackles with anticipation across Washington State, as the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) officially announced the highly anticipated state baseball tournament first-round pairings this past Sunday. Dreams cultivated through countless practices, hard-fought victories, and relentless dedication are now one step closer to reality for student-athletes across six classifications. From the biggest 4A schools to the spirited 1B programs, every team is vying for the ultimate prize, a state championship trophy.

This year's journey to the finals promises to be epic. The 4A and 3A state semifinals and finals are set to electrify Everett Memorial Stadium on May 29-30, while the 2A and 1A champions will be crowned at Joe Martin Stadium in Bellingham. Meanwhile, the passionate contenders in 1B and 2B will battle it out at Wood Field at Carlon Park in Selah, showcasing the incredible depth of talent found throughout our state.

4A Clash: Dominance and Dark Horses

The Class 4A bracket is brimming with top-tier talent, featuring powerhouse programs ready to make their mark. Undefeated No. 1 seed Richland will kick off their campaign against No. 16 Skyline, looking to assert their dominance early. However, eyes are firmly fixed on the No. 2 seed Sumner, a team that has consistently impressed throughout the season. Senior third baseman Landon Meyer, whose dynamic play and leadership have been crucial, will be a player to watch as Sumner faces No. 15 Moses Lake. Meyer's ability to impact the game, both offensively and defensively, makes Sumner a formidable challenger for the state title.

Other compelling 4A matchups include No. 3 Tahoma taking on No. 14 Lake Washington, and a fascinating clash between No. 8 Olympia and No. 9 Woodinville, a game that could easily go either way and set the tone for a deep tournament run.

3A and 2A Powerhouses Prepare

In Class 3A, No. 1 Mount Vernon leads a competitive field, awaiting the winner of the Kelso/Eastside Catholic play-in game. They will need to be at their absolute best, with strong contenders like No. 2 Kennewick and No. 3 Gig Harbor also looking to assert their will. The intensity of 3A baseball is always palpable, and this year's bracket is no exception, promising thrilling contests from the first pitch.

Class 2A also brings significant excitement, with No. 1 Bainbridge leading the charge against No. 16 Pullman. Bainbridge has shown incredible resilience and skill all season, but they'll face fierce competition from teams like No. 2 Tumwater, who takes on No. 15 Port Angeles, and No. 3 Othello, facing No. 14 Chief Sealth. Every single game in these brackets will be a testament to the hard work and dedication these athletes pour into their sport.

Small School Spirit Shines

The smaller classifications, 1A, 2B, and 1B, represent the heart and soul of high school baseball in many communities, showcasing incredible talent and fierce loyalty. No. 1 Montesano headlines the 1A bracket, squaring off against No. 16 Royal, while No. 1 Tri-Cities Prep is the team to beat in 2B, facing No. 16 Orcas Island. In 1B, Liberty Christian holds the top spot, ready to battle the winner of Northwest Christian and Wahkiakum. These programs, often built on deep community support and exceptional individual efforts, play with immense passion and are sure to deliver memorable moments throughout the tournament.

The stage is set for an unforgettable several weeks of baseball, a true celebration of Washington prep sports. Good luck to all the incredible athletes and coaches as they chase state glory, making memories that will last a lifetime.
