Washington Defensive Lineman Voi Tunuufi Dead at 23 in Car Accident

Former Washington Huskies defensive lineman Voi Tunuufi has died at 23 years old. His sister, Sanita Tunuufi, confirmed to the Seattle Times that he was killed in a car accident on Sunday. The University of Washington released a statement honoring the Utah native: "Our hearts are with the Tunuufi family, his loved ones and every brother who wore the W beside him. Forever in The Pack."

A Four Year Journey at Washington

Tunuufi made 52 appearances for the Huskies across four seasons after playing high school football at East High in Salt Lake City. He signed with Washington under coach Jimmy Lake in 2021 and went on to play for two additional head coaches, Kalen DeBoer and Jedd Fisch. His versatility made him a crucial piece of the defensive line, especially during his senior campaign.

Tunuufi declared for the 2025 NFL Draft and attended Washington's Pro Day, but went undrafted and didn't receive a rookie minicamp invite. That didn't stop him. He stayed in shape with hopes of landing with a team in the CFL or UFL.

His high school coach, Brandon Matich, remembered him as exceptional both on and off the field. "He's the best football player I ever coached," Matich said. "And he was an even better person. Everybody loved Voi." Matich noted that Tunuufi was the first freshman to start for him and one of only two players to start all four years during his 15-year tenure at East High.

Our thoughts are with the Tunuufi family during this tragic time.
