Washington Huskies Defensive Lineman Voi Tunuufi Dead at 23 in Car Accident

The University of Washington football community is mourning the loss of former defensive lineman Voi Tunuufi, who died in a car accident on Sunday at age 23. His sister, Sanita Tunuufi, confirmed the tragedy to the Seattle Times.

UW honored their former player on social media with a statement: "Our hearts are with the Tunuufi family, his loved ones and every brother who wore the W beside him. Forever in The Pack."

A Four-Year Husky

Tunuufi made 52 appearances for Washington over four seasons after playing high school football at East High in Salt Lake City. He signed with the Huskies under coach Jimmy Lake in 2021 and went on to play under two other head coaches, Kalen DeBoer and Jedd Fisch.

The Utah native made 14 starts during his time in Washington, recording 86 tackles, 15.5 for loss, 12.5 sacks, two passes defended, and a forced fumble. His versatility made him an important part of the program's defensive line, especially during his senior season. Tunuufi last played for UW in the 2024 Sun Bowl.

Fighting for His Dream

Tunuufi declared for the 2025 NFL Draft and participated in Washington's Pro Day, but was not selected and did not receive a rookie minicamp invite. Undeterred, he remained in shape with designs on making a team in the CFL or UFL.

His high school coach, Brandon Matich, celebrated Tunuufi's character and work ethic: "He's the best football player I ever coached, and he was an even better person. Everybody loved Voi." Matich noted that Tunuufi was the first freshman to start for him and one of only two players to start all four years under his 15-year tenure at East High.

Our hearts go out to the Tunuufi family during this difficult time.
