Washington State Football Legend Deone Bucannon Returns to Pullman, Inspiring Next Generation of WA Prep Stars

Pullman, WA - The spirit of commitment runs deep, a lesson learned early for student-athletes across Washington state. This month, that spirit shone brightly in Pullman as former Washington State University football star and NFL veteran Deone Bucannon made good on a decade-old promise to his parents, Duane Bucannon and Sonji Bucannon, by officially earning his degree from WSU. While Bucannon’s prep days were spent outside the Evergreen State, his journey epitomizes the dedication, academic focus, and love for community that fuels countless high school athletes striving for greatness in Washington’s 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A football programs.

A Promise Kept, A Legacy Secured

In 2014, Deone Bucannon departed Pullman early, a top NFL draft prospect ready to embark on a professional career. Yet, he carried with him a solemn vow to his family: he would return to complete his education. A standout safety for the Cougars from 2010 to 2013, Bucannon earned All-American and All-Pac-12 Conference first-team honors as a senior. His collegiate career boasted over 380 tackles and 15 interceptions, including a memorable touchdown-robbing snag in the 2012 Apple Cup, showcasing the kind of game-changing playmaking that Washington high school coaches dream of developing in their own athletes.

Drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, Bucannon transitioned seamlessly to the NFL, accumulating more than 400 tackles in five seasons. His career saw him cycle through several teams, ultimately retiring as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during their Super Bowl championship playoff run in 2021. Throughout his professional journey, the importance of education, a cornerstone instilled by his military parents, never faded. “Finishing what you started, that’s just something in our household that’s just always been ingrained in me,” Bucannon shared, a sentiment echoed in locker rooms and on fields across every WIAA district.

Paving the Way for Washington's Rising Talent

Bucannon's story is a powerful testament to perseverance, one that resonates deeply with Washington’s current crop of high school football talent. Whether it’s a hard-hitting linebacker from a rural 2B program or a dynamic wide receiver from a competitive 4A powerhouse, the path to collegiate and professional success is paved with hard work on and off the field. His commitment to education, even after a successful NFL career, sends a clear message: academics are paramount. This dedication aligns perfectly with the values promoted by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, emphasizing the "student" in student-athlete.

The lessons Bucannon learned from coaches like then-defensive backs coach Chris Ball, and the support he found in Pullman, are invaluable for any young athlete considering their next step. The journey of a three-star recruit from California to an NFL star who prioritizes his degree serves as a compelling blueprint for athletes from Bellevue to Spokane, urging them to embrace challenges and stay true to their commitments.

The Pullman Spirit Endures

For Bucannon, Pullman became more than just a college town, it was a home. Despite initial "culture shock" upon his first visit, he quickly fell in love with the welcoming community and the unwavering support for athletics. This unique Cougar spirit continues to attract top-tier talent from Washington high schools each year, offering a blend of passionate football and a tight-knit community feel.

As the next generation of Washington prep football stars chase their dreams, Deone Bucannon stands as an inspiring figure, a reminder that true success encompasses both athletic achievement and academic fulfillment. His return to finish his degree solidifies his legacy not just as a Cougar great, but as a role model for every determined student-athlete in the Evergreen State.

We look forward to seeing how Bucannon’s renewed commitment to education inspires countless student-athletes across Washington to pursue their dreams both on the field and in the classroom, setting the stage for future triumphs.
