Will Burghardt Is Taking Over Washington's Best Team and Bombers Fans Should Be HYPED

Hold up, Seattle sports faithful! There’s massive news shaking up the high school basketball scene right here in the Evergreen State, and if you bleed Washington sports like we do, you gotta hear this. Richland, the absolute powerhouse Bombers, just announced their new head coach, and it’s a move that's got everyone talking. Get ready, because a 27-year-old is stepping up to lead the best team in Washington, and it's going to be wild to watch!

The Emerald City's Newest Young Gun on the Bench

So, the big reveal dropped this past Thursday, May 14, 2026: Will Burghardt is officially the man taking the reins for Richland boys basketball. And get this, he’s only 27! That makes him the youngest head coach in the program's storied history, which goes all the way back to 1947. Think about that, the Bombers have had 30 head coaches in their program history, and this kid is the seventh since '47. That's a huge vote of confidence from a program that knows how to win.

Burghardt isn't coming in cold, either. He's fresh off a three-season run as the head coach for Newport (OR) boys basketball. He racked up an impressive 49-24 overall record there. In his final season with the Cubs, he led them to a stellar 19-5 record and a deep playoff run in the OHSAA. He knows how to win, and he knows how to get teams ready for big moments. Now he's bringing that energy and experience to a program that already expects nothing less than championships.

Richland's Reign Continues, Now Under New Leadership

Let's talk about the team Burghardt is inheriting, because holy smokes, the Richland Bombers are a force. They weren't just good last season, they were the No. 1 ranked team in Washington for the entire 2025-26 season! These guys are absolutely dominant, capping off their fourth consecutive season with 20-plus wins. They literally finished the season with a perfect, yes PERFECT, 28-0 record. And how did they seal that perfect run? With a Class 4A state championship title, taking down Gonzaga Prep 63-49. The final Washington 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings had them sitting pretty at No. 1. That's a high bar, folks!

What's Next For The Bombers?

This is a seriously exciting moment for Washington high school basketball. With Will Burghardt, the youngest head coach ever, now leading a team that finished a perfect 28-0 and won a state championship, the stakes couldn't be higher. Can this young gun keep the Bombers' incredible dynasty going? Can he build on that perfect record and push them to even greater heights? We're all going to be watching the Emerald City's rising stars very closely. Get ready, Bombers fans, the future looks incredibly bright!
