Washington Football Lost One of Its Own: Former Husky Voi Tunuufi Dead at 23

The University of Washington football community is mourning the loss of former defensive lineman Voi Tunuufi, who died in a car accident on Sunday at just 23 years old. His sister, Sanita Tunuufi, confirmed the tragedy to the Seattle Times, sending shockwaves through a program that shaped him over four seasons.

UW released a statement honoring their fallen brother: "Our hearts are with the Tunuufi family, his loved ones and every brother who wore the W beside him. Forever in The Pack."

A Versatile Force on the Defensive Line

Tunuufi made 52 appearances for the Huskies after arriving from East High in Salt Lake City in 2021 under then-coach Jimmy Lake. He went on to play under two other coaches, Kalen DeBoer and Jedd Fisch, becoming a crucial part of the defensive line rotation throughout his tenure. His versatility and work ethic made him a key contributor, especially during his senior season.

The numbers tell the story of a productive college career. Over his time in Seattle, Tunuufi recorded 14 starts, 86 tackles, 15.5 for loss, 12.5 sacks, two passes defended and a forced fumble. His last game in a Huskies uniform came in the 2024 Sun Bowl.

Still Chasing His Dream

After his playing days at UW ended, Tunuufi declared for the 2025 NFL Draft and participated in Washington's Pro Day, but went undrafted and didn't receive a rookie minicamp invite. That didn't stop him. He stayed in shape with bigger dreams on the horizon, hoping to catch on with either a CFL or UFL team.

His high school coach, Brandon Matich, remembered him as exceptional. "He's the best football player I ever coached," Matich said, "and he was an even better person. Everybody loved Voi. The calls I've gotten from people I haven't heard from in years have been reaching out. He was a powerful personality."

Matich noted that Tunuufi was the first freshman to start for him and one of only two players to start all four years during his 15-year tenure at East High.

Our thoughts are with the Tunuufi family during this devastating time.
