Washington High School Tigers Get Championship-Caliber Wrestling Facility

New 3,400-Square-Foot Space Doubles Previous Practice Room

Massillon, Ohio - The Washington High School wrestling program is training in style these days. A generous gift from the Paul and Carol David Foundation has transformed the Tigers' wrestling operation with a brand-new 3,400-square-foot practice facility that doubles the size of their previous space.

The state-of-the-art addition, which opened to wrestlers at the start of this season, connects directly to the Paul L. David Athletic Training Facility and represents a game-changer for one of Ohio's most storied wrestling programs. Construction on the $10,000 facility addition began in June 2024, with architect John Patrick Picard designing the space and Beaver serving as general contractor. Assistant Athletic Director Brian Pachis guided the project and says the new wrestling room is already seeing constant use.

"It's getting a lot of use," Pachis said during a recent tour. "Every day there are people in here."

Beyond the expanded practice space, the addition includes much-needed infrastructure that was missing from the indoor facility. The project added women's and men's restrooms and locker rooms featuring more than 70 lockers, showers, and a family restroom option. Previously, anyone using the indoor facility had to trek back to the high school's main restrooms, creating security and supervision challenges when school wasn't in session.

New storage space for the indoor football field equipment also addresses a longstanding operational headache. Before the addition, large practice equipment was left directly on the football field. When outside groups used the facility, gear had to be constantly moved and, according to Pachis, sometimes doubled as an impromptu "playground" for guests.

The generous David Foundation funding also supported upgrades throughout the indoor facility itself, including new turf, refreshed wall padding, and a complete paint job that gives the entire complex a championship feel.

Community Resource Generating Revenue

The new wrestling room isn't just serving Washington High's Tigers. Two outside wrestling organizations have already partnered with the school to use the facility for practice, paying rental fees that help support the program. This community-centered approach aligns with Superintendent Paul Salvino's vision for stewardship.

"The Massillon City School District is truly humbled by the generous gifts from The Paul and Carol David Foundation," Salvino said in a statement. "These additions and upgrades will directly benefit our students ensuring our tradition of excellence will continue."

New mat equipment is arriving this summer, and construction on a new main entrance with a sizeable vestibule is expected to wrap up later this year. With these world-class facilities now in place, the Washington High School wrestling program has everything it needs to maintain its legendary status for years to come.
