Mays' meteoric rise continued, and he was called up to the New York Giants in May 1951 at just 20 years old. His initial taste of MLB action wasn't easy; he famously started his career 0-for-12, contemplating quitting due to the pressure. But with manager Leo Durocher's unwavering faith, Mays persevered. His first career hit was a memorable home run off Hall of Famer Warren Spahn, and from that moment, he never looked back. Mays finished his rookie season with 20 home runs, an impressive .274 batting average, and helped lead the Giants to a dramatic National League pennant win, earning him the National League Rookie of the Year award. His immediate impact signaled the arrival of a generational talent.
While his early career was spectacular, it faced a brief interruption. Mays served in the U.S. Army during parts of the 1952 and 1953 seasons, missing almost two full years of his prime. Upon his return in 1954, there was no doubt about his continued dominance. He responded by leading the league in batting average (.345) and winning the National League MVP, cementing his status as one of baseball's brightest stars and guiding the Giants to a World Series championship. It was clear: the Say Hey Kid was here to stay, and his legendary career was only just beginning.
