Zack Wheeler Throws 56 Strikes in His First Game Back and the Phillies Remember How to Win

Zack Wheeler is back, and Philadelphia got the statement win it desperately needed. The Phillies ace made his 2026 debut against Atlanta on Saturday night, and even though he only went five innings, he did enough to help snap a brutal 10-game losing streak with an 8-5 victory in extras.

Wheeler Shook Off the Rust Fast

Look, Wheeler hasn't pitched since August 15 against the Nationals. That's a long time to be away. But when he took the mound in Atlanta, he looked ready. In five innings of work, he struck out six batters while allowing just three hits and three walks. More importantly, he threw 56 strikes out of 84 total pitches. That's efficiency. That's control. That's a guy who's been thinking about getting back on the mound.

He gave up two runs, but left the game with a 3-2 lead in place. The bullpen held it down, and the Phillies bats came alive in extras to finish the job at 8-5.

Breaking the Skid When It Mattered Most

Ten games. That's how long Philadelphia had been spiraling before Saturday night. That streak was a weight. But with Wheeler back in the rotation and performing like himself, the Phillies got over the hump. This win signals something: their ace is ready, and they're ready to start competing again.

Early season form matters. Momentum matters. And right now, Philadelphia has both.
