23-Year-Old Prospect Trey Gibson Getting His Shot Against the Yankees, and the Orioles Are Out of Options

The Baltimore Orioles are calling up right-hander Trey Gibson for his MLB debut Sunday against the New York Yankees, manager Craig Albernaz confirmed Saturday. The kid gets his first crack at the majors because the Orioles' rotation is basically held together with tape right now.

When Injuries Stack Up, Prospects Get Their Chance

Left-hander Trevor Rogers landed on the injured list this week with an illness. Dean Kremer is already out with a quad injury. And Zach Eflin? He's done for the season after Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. That's three rotation guys down, which means Gibson, who went undrafted out of Liberty after two seasons, gets the call.

The 23-year-old has spent four seasons grinding in the minors since signing with Baltimore in 2023. This year with Triple-A Norfolk, he's put up a 2-2 record with a 5.84 ERA across six starts. Not exactly eye-popping numbers, but the Orioles don't have the luxury of waiting for a prettier stat line right now.

No. 3 Prospect Takes the Biggest Stage

Gibson is the Orioles' No. 3 overall top prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Sunday against the Yankees is about as big a stage as a debut gets. He'll get his opportunity to prove whether all that minor league seasoning paid off when it counts.

First pitch is Sunday against New York. Welcome to the show, kid.
