27-Year-Old Will Burghardt Is Now Head Coach of Richland, And It's A Bold Play For Washington's Top Squad

Alright, listen up, Emerald City! You thought you knew what was up in Washington high school hoops, right? Think again! Richland boys basketball just dropped a bombshell that's got everyone in the Evergreen State buzzing, and if you're a fan of serious talent and bold moves, you're gonna want to hear this. The state's absolute top-ranked team from the 2025-26 season, the Richland Bombers, just announced they've hired Will Burghardt as their new head coach. And here's the kicker, folks: the dude is only 27 years old! Yeah, you read that right.

Youth Takes the Helm: A New Era for the Bombers

This isn't just any coaching change, this is a seismic shift for the Bombers. Burghardt isn't just taking over a powerhouse program, he's making history. At 27, he becomes the youngest head coach in the entire history of the Richland boys basketball program. Think about that for a second! This is a program with deep roots, having only had six previous head coaches since 1947 before this, making Burghardt just the seventh. He's the 30th overall, but that stat just screams stability until now. To bring in someone so young to lead a team that's been absolutely dominant, well, that's a statement. It’s a vote of confidence in a new vision, a new energy. This isn't your grandpa's high school basketball.

Richland's Reign Continues: What He's Inheriting

Let's be clear about what Burghardt is walking into: a goldmine. The Richland Bombers aren't just good, they're ridiculously good. This past season, they put together their fourth consecutive 20-plus win season, capping it all off by absolutely dominating Gonzaga Prep in the Class 4A state championship with a 63-49 victory. And if that wasn't enough, they finished with a perfect 28-0 record. A perfect season! They were ranked No. 1 in Washington according to the final 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings. So yeah, he's taking over the undisputed best team in the state, a team that's basically been building a dynasty. The pressure? It's real, but so is the potential.

The Résumé: What Burghardt Brings to the Table

So, a 27-year-old taking over a state champ. Does he have the chops? Absolutely. Burghardt isn't coming in cold. He's spent the last three seasons as the head boys basketball coach at Newport (OR), where he built a solid 49-24 overall record. In his final season leading the Cubs, he guided them to an impressive 19-5 record and pushed them deep into the OHSAA playoffs. That's serious experience for someone so young. He knows how to win, he knows how to coach, and now he's bringing that energy and winning mentality to the top program in Washington. We're talking about a guy who has been grinding and achieving, and now he's got the keys to the kingdom. What does this mean for Richland? It means excitement, it means a fresh perspective, and it means the rest of Washington high school basketball better be ready. The Bombers are in good hands, and the future looks incredibly bright for the green and gold!
