Richland Bombers Just Hired a 27-Year-Old Head Coach, and Nobody in Washington Is Ready For It

Alright, Emerald City, listen up! You know the Richland Bombers, right? The team that absolutely dominated last season, went undefeated, and snagged the Class 4A state championship? Yeah, *those* guys. Well, they just pulled off a move that should send shivers down every other high school basketball program's spine. Richland announced Thursday they've hired Will Burghardt as their new head coach, and get this: the dude is only 27 years old. Twenty-seven! This isn't just a new coach, folks, this is a seismic shift, and if you're a fan of Washington high school hoops, you better be paying attention to what's brewing out east.

The Young Gun Taking Over a Dynasty

So, who is this Will Burghardt, the youngest head coach in Richland's entire program history? The man is coming off three seasons leading the Newport (OR) boys basketball team, where he built a solid 49-24 overall record. In his final season with the Cubs, he wasn't messing around either, steering them to a 19-5 record and making a deep playoff run in the OHSAA. He's clearly got game, and he's bringing that energy, that winning mentality, to a program that already knows how to win. This isn't some experimental hire, this is a statement. Richland, already at the top, just found a coach who can keep them there, perhaps for decades. He’s the seventh head coach since 1947, but only the 30th in program history, which tells you they don't change coaches lightly.

Richland's Reign Continues?

Let’s talk about what Burghardt is stepping into, because it's nothing short of a powerhouse. The Bombers finished the 2025-26 season as the undisputed No. 1 ranked team in Washington, according to the final Massey Rankings. They put together a perfect 28-0 record, an *unblemished* run, culminating in that epic 63-49 victory over Gonzaga Prep for the Class 4A state championship. That's not a fluke, either. This past season marked their fourth consecutive 20-plus win season. Richland isn't just good, they're consistently great, a well-oiled machine. Bringing in a young, hungry coach with a proven track record from Newport feels like an injection of even more drive into an already dominant program. You gotta wonder what kind of schemes this guy is cooking up already. This is a massive hire for the Bombers, and it's going to make waves across the state. With Burghardt now at the helm, the target on Richland's back just got even bigger. Every team in Washington will be studying their every move, because if this coaching wizard can replicate his success and build on Richland's already incredible foundation, we could be looking at a new era of dominance. Better clear your schedules, folks, because the Bombers are about to get even more exciting.
