The 27-Year-Old Coach Richland Hired, And Why Washington Hoops Needs To Pay Attention

Okay, Washington high school hoops fans, listen up! The Richland Bombers, our state's undisputed kings from the 2025-26 season, just made a move that's gonna have everyone talking. I mean, seriously, this is wild. The team that went an absolutely flawless 28-0 and snagged the Class 4A state championship? Yeah, they brought in a new head coach, and he's only 27 years old. Talk about a curveball! Will Burghardt is officially the new man leading the Bombers, announced by the school on Thursday, and if you're not paying attention to this, you should be.

A Young Gun Takes the Reins

Will Burghardt is stepping into a seriously high-pressure situation, but man, what an opportunity. At just 27 years old, he's now the youngest head coach in the entire history of the Richland boys basketball program. Think about that for a second! This isn't some tiny, rebuilding program; this is the team that just finished last season ranked a dominant No. 1 in the final Washington 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings. They're at the top of the mountain, and they're entrusting that legacy to a dude barely out of college himself. It's a bold move, and it shows a ton of faith in Burghardt.

Before making his way to the Evergreen State, Burghardt spent three seasons as the head boys basketball coach at Newport, Oregon. He wasn't just collecting a paycheck either. He put up a rock-solid 49-24 overall record there, showing he knows how to build a winning culture. In his final season leading the Newport Cubs, he guided them to an impressive 19-5 record and a deep playoff run in the OHSAA. So yeah, he's young, but he's got a track record of success. The question now is, can he translate that winning pedigree to the biggest stage in Washington high school hoops?

Dynasty Mode: Engaged

Let's talk about what Burghardt is inheriting, because it's absolutely wild. This isn't just a good team; it's a bona fide dynasty that has been absolutely tearing it up. The Bombers aren't messing around, folks. They just capped off their fourth consecutive season with 20-plus wins, which, let's be real, is just insane consistency year after year. That kind of sustained excellence is rare at any level, especially in high school.

And how did they finish the 2025-26 season? Only by going absolutely undefeated, a perfect 28-0 record. Let that sink in for a second: TWENTY-EIGHT AND OH. That's pure dominance. They then capped it all off by clinching the Class 4A state championship, flat-out defeating Gonzaga Prep with a commanding 63-49 victory. This program has had 30 head coaches in its history, and Burghardt is only the seventh since 1947. That tells you they value stability and success, and they clearly see something special in him to break that mold with such a young hire. He's got big shoes to fill, but he's also walking into a program that consistently builds winners. The biggest challenge for him now is to not just continue, but elevate, that championship train.

So, what's next for the Bombers with their new, super young coach? Everyone in Washington high school hoops is going to be watching. Can Burghardt maintain that undefeated record? Can he lead them to another Class 4A title? The buzz is already real. Get ready, because the Will Burghardt era at Richland is officially here, and it's going to be fascinating to see if this young coach can continue the Bombers' dominance. You know we'll be tracking every single dribble.
