The 28th Ranked Defense That PFF Says Could Get Zac Taylor Fired and Nobody's Ready For It

Alright, Seattle, listen up because this one's got me shaking my head harder than a missed tackle at Lumen Field. We're barely into the regular season, and the NFL coaching hot seat is already scorching! Pro Football Focus just dropped their list of six head coaches who are already on the chopping block, and right at the top, like a poorly-executed trick play, is Zac Taylor in Cincinnati. Bradley Locker from PFF didn't pull any punches, saying Taylor's job is hanging by a thread, and honestly, is anyone even surprised? The pressure cooker is ON, and it's barely April!

"Can't Afford Another Slip-Up Season" is the Understatement of the Entire League

Locker’s take on Taylor being "retained to begin with going into 2026" hit me like a full-speed Jaxon Smith-Njigba juke move. Seriously, he's starting this season on borrowed time! This isn't some casual observation, folks. This is a head coach with the weight of the entire franchise, and crucially, Joe Burrow's future, squarely on his shoulders. The Bengals' front office knows they absolutely CANNOT afford another "slip-up season" if they want to keep their superstar quarterback happy and focused. When you're talking about a guy like Burrow, his future is EVERYTHING for that team's trajectory. Taylor has to deliver a postseason run, period, or that team could face some serious questions down the road.

Those Defensive Numbers? They're Straight-Up Embarrassing, Even With "Upgrades"

So, what's the biggest headache for Taylor? It’s undeniably that defense, and man, are the numbers grim. Sure, they brought in some "upgrades" like Dexter Lawrence, our guy Boye Mafe, and Bryan Cook this offseason to try and plug the holes. But according to Locker, this unit has been a straight-up sieve since 2024. We're talking 28th in EPA per play, which is just plain bad! And it gets worse: 29th in success rate, and a mind-boggling 29th in touchdown drive rate given up. Can you even imagine? That’s not just poor performance, that’s an absolute problem that needs fixing yesterday. Locker didn't mince words, stating "the unit simply needs to play far better." And get this, they STILL need a proven linebacker to settle things down because the unit was "out of position far too often last season." You can bring in a few new pieces, but if the foundational issues persist, you're just putting a band-aid on a gaping wound. It's on Taylor to make those guys click, and fast!

This early season pressure is real, folks. While we're all watching our Mariners at T-Mobile Park and rooting for our Sounders, stories like Taylor's are a stark reminder of the cutthroat nature of the NFL. He's not the only one feeling the heat, either: Aaron Glenn with the Jets, Todd Bowles in Tampa, and Shane Steichen for the Colts are all in similar spots. Even Matt LaFleur and Nick Sirianni are coaches "worth monitoring in January." It just goes to show, the coaching carousel never stops, and every game, every play, every decision matters. Will these guys turn it around, or will the hot seat become too much to bear? We’ll be watching every snap!
