Washington's Undefeated #1 Team Hired a 27-Year-Old Coach, And the Dynasty Just Got Scarier

Okay, Emerald City, listen up because the biggest news in Washington high school hoops just dropped like a thunderous dunk! Richland's boys basketball program, the absolute juggernaut that just went 28-0 and snatched a state title, made a move Thursday that's gonna have the entire Evergreen State talking. They just hired Will Burghardt as their new head coach, and here's the kicker: the dude is only 27 years old! Yeah, you read that right. A 27-year-old is taking the reins of the state's most dominant team. Wild, right?

A Young Gun Takes the Reins of a Juggernaut

This isn't just any coaching change. Burghardt isn't just the new guy on the sideline, he's making history. At 27, he becomes the youngest head coach EVER for the Bombers. Think about that for a second! This program has been around since 1947, and he's only the seventh head coach in all that time, the 30th overall in program history. That's a legacy to step into, and they picked a guy barely out of college himself to lead it. It shows a crazy amount of trust in a young coach, and it's absolutely thrilling to see a program make such a bold move.

The Dynasty He's Inheriting? Absolutely Bonkers.

So, what kind of team is this 27-year-old walking into? Only the best in Washington, that's what! Richland finished the 2025-26 season as the state's No. 1 ranked team, according to the final Washington 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings. And let's not forget the perfect 28-0 record they just hung up, capping it all off with a Class 4A state championship. They flat out beat Gonzaga Prep 63-49 in that title game! That's four consecutive seasons with 20-plus wins, folks. They're a machine! Burghardt isn't coming in cold though; he's got a track record. He spent three seasons as the head boys basketball coach at Newport (OR), where he put together a solid 49-24 overall record. In his final season with the Cubs, he led them to a 19-5 record and a deep playoff run in the OHSAA. He knows how to win, and now he's got the keys to a championship-caliber squad. The state better watch out!

So, the question on everyone's mind has got to be: Can he keep the Bomber train rolling? Can this young, energetic coach continue the dynasty that's taken over Washington high school basketball? The Bombers are a force, and bringing in the youngest coach ever for the program after an undefeated state championship run? That's not just a hire, it's a statement. The entire state will be watching to see if Will Burghardt can pick up right where they left off. Get ready for some high-stakes basketball, Washington, because this ride just got a whole lot more interesting!
