Brett Howden's Short-Handed Overtime Goal Gives Vegas a Stranglehold on the Series

The Vegas Golden Knights are one win away from advancing to the next round after pulling off a gutsy 5-4 victory over the Utah Mammoth on Wednesday night in Las Vegas. Brett Howden was the hero, burying a short-handed goal at 5:28 of the second overtime period to give Vegas the 3-2 series edge in their Western Conference first-round playoff matchup.

Howden's Clutch Moment

Playing with the man disadvantage in double overtime is about as high-pressure as hockey gets, and Howden delivered when it mattered most. His short-handed tally proved to be the difference maker in a back-and-forth playoff battle that had both teams leaving everything on the ice. The Golden Knights forced the extra periods and then found a way to win it, which is exactly what you want to see from a team hunting for a series clinch.

Vegas Takes Control

With a 3-2 series lead, the Golden Knights have maneuvered themselves into prime position. Utah isn't going anywhere quietly, but Vegas showed the resilience and opportunism you need when the stakes are this high. This wasn't a blowout or a dominant display, it was a hard-fought playoff battle that Vegas won in the cruelest way possible for the Mammoth, in the second overtime period.

Game 6 looms next, and the Golden Knights will be looking to close out the series at home. Utah will be desperate to keep their season alive. Either way, Vegas proved Wednesday night that they have the clutch gene when it matters most.
