Buffalo Just Ended 19 Years of Playoff Heartbreak and the East Better Watch Out

The Buffalo Sabres did something their city hasn't seen since 2007: they won a playoff series. And they did it decisively, shutting down the Boston Bruins 4-1 at TD Garden on Friday night to clinch the Eastern Conference first-round matchup in Game 6.

This wasn't some squeaky-by kind of victory either. The Sabres came out firing, with Alex Tuch and Mattias Samuelsson building a 2-0 lead right in the first period. Buffalo never looked back. Zach Benson and Josh Norris added insurance goals in the third to bury Boston for good. Alex Lyon was stellar in net, stopping 25 shots to seal the deal, and the Sabres made a statement by winning all three games they played in Boston this series.

The Supporting Cast Showed Up When It Mattered

Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin weren't lighting the lamp in Game 6, but they were orchestrating the offense. Thompson and Dahlin each dished out two assists, proving that depth scoring and smart playmaking win playoff games. David Pastrnak's goal was the only thing Boston could manage, while Jeremy Swayman turned aside 22 shots in a losing effort. Sometimes that's not enough.

The Sabres Aren't Done Yet

Nineteen years is a long time to wait. The last time Buffalo won a playoff series, the Sabres were still chasing memories of better days. Now they're headed to the conference semifinals for the first time since 2007, and they're carrying momentum into it. That's dangerous.
