Cale Makar's College Years: From [College] to the NHL

Before dazzling NHL audiences and hoisting the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche, Cale Makar honed his extraordinary talents in the collegiate ranks. Opting for a different path than many top prospects who jump straight to major junior hockey, Makar chose to attend the University of Massachusetts Amherst. This decision, made after being drafted 4th overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, proved to be a pivotal two-year journey that transformed him into a legitimate superstar.

Makar's Ascendancy at UMass

Makar's freshman season (2017-2018) was a strong indicator of his potential. He immediately made an impact for the Minutemen, showcasing his elite skating, puck-handling, and offensive vision. While his 21 points in 34 games were impressive for a defenseman, it was his sophomore year (2018-2019) that truly etched his name into college hockey lore. Makar exploded onto the national scene, becoming the most dominant player in the NCAA.

During that sensational sophomore campaign, Makar recorded an astounding 49 points (16 goals, 33 assists) in just 41 games, leading all NCAA defensemen in scoring. His game-changing skills were on full display as he quarterbacked a potent UMass offense and guided the Minutemen to their first-ever Hockey East regular season and tournament titles, culminating in a berth in the National Championship game. For his exceptional performance, Makar was awarded the Hobey Baker Award as the top player in men's collegiate hockey. His time at UMass allowed him to mature physically and mentally, refine his defensive responsibilities, and unleash his offensive creativity, preparing him perfectly for the leap to the professional game.
