Chiefs DBs Coach Dave Merritt Arrested and Charged With Domestic Battery

Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt was arrested Wednesday night and booked into Johnson County jail on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge. The Johnson County District Attorney's Office filed a complaint accusing the 54-year-old coach of "unlawfully, knowingly, or recklessly" causing bodily harm to a daughter, the basis for domestic charges filed Thursday morning in Missouri.

What We Know So Far

Merritt is due in court Thursday, the same day the first round of the NFL Draft kicks off in Pittsburgh. The timing puts significant pressure on the organization as it deals with both a personnel matter and the biggest event on the football calendar. The Chiefs released a brief statement to the Kansas City Star, saying the team is aware of the arrest and has no further comment at this time.

Merritt's Coaching Background

The veteran coach brings decades of NFL experience to his role with Kansas City. Before joining the Chiefs in 2019, Merritt served as a defensive position coach with the New York Jets, New York Giants, and Arizona Cardinals. His playing career was brief but spanned multiple franchises. A college linebacker, Merritt was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round of the 1993 NFL Draft and also played for the then-Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals.

This arrest marks a significant development for the Chiefs organization heading into one of the busiest weeks on the NFL calendar. How the team handles the situation and potential coaching changes moving forward will be something to monitor closely as the draft unfolds.
