Cougar Legend Deone Bucannon Returns to Pullman, Fulfills Promise and Inspires Washington's Next Generation

Pullman, WA - A decade after leaving Washington State University for the bright lights of the NFL, former Cougar football standout Deone Bucannon has made good on a deeply personal promise, returning to finish his degree. This isn't just a story about an athlete, it's a powerful testament to perseverance, family values, and the enduring spirit of the Cougar community, serving as an incredible inspiration for every high school athlete lacing up their cleats across Washington state. Bucannon, a star safety for the Cougars from 2010 to 2013, recently donned the crimson and gray once more, this time to walk across the graduation stage, fulfilling a vow he made to his parents before embarking on his professional career. "It's kind of been a long time coming," Bucannon reflected, expressing immense pride in achieving this milestone under the "WSU flag."

From High School Prospect to NFL Star: A Journey of Dedication

Bucannon’s journey to the NFL began long before he became an All-American at WSU. Raised in a military family, he honed his skills through high school, eventually becoming a highly sought-after three-star recruit. His commitment to Washington State was immediate, a decision he made on his very first visit to Pullman. While a student-athlete for the Cougars, Bucannon dominated the field, earning All-American and All-Pac-12 Conference first-team honors as a senior. His collegiate career was remarkable, boasting over 380 tackles and 15 interceptions, including a memorable touchdown-robbing snag in the 2012 Apple Cup. His exceptional play caught the eye of NFL scouts, leading to his selection by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2014 NFL Draft. He spent five seasons with the Cardinals, amassing over 400 tackles, before an ankle injury led him to cycle through other teams, eventually retiring after being part of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Super Bowl-winning playoff run in 2021.

Education, Family, and the Pullman Spirit

Despite a successful NFL career, the promise to complete his education never faded. This commitment was deeply ingrained in Bucannon by his parents, Duane Bucannon, a Marine Corps veteran, and Sonji Bucannon, who served in the Navy. Both parents hold multiple degrees in healthcare, fostering a household where education and seeing things through were paramount. "Finishing what you started, that's just something in our household that's just always been ingrained in me," Bucannon shared. His mother, Sonji, emphasized, "We’re one of those types of families, stacking degrees and making sure you’re well-rounded in life." Bucannon's love for WSU and the Pullman community also played a significant role in his return. He reminisced about the initial "culture shock" of arriving in Pullman, flying into the small airport and driving past endless wheat fields, but quickly falling in love with the welcoming nature and unwavering support for athletics. He fondly remembers coaches like then-defensive backs coach Chris Ball, who helped shape him during his time as a Cougar. For the young athletes competing in Washington's various high school athletic conferences today, Bucannon's story is a powerful reminder that the pursuit of excellence extends far beyond the final whistle, highlighting that true success means honoring your commitments and striving for greatness in every aspect of life. Deone Bucannon's journey from top recruit to NFL star and now college graduate embodies the spirit of perseverance and commitment that we champion in Washington state prep sports, proving that hard work and dedication pave the way for a lifetime of achievement.
