Deshaun Watson could be the Cleveland Browns' Week 1 starter. According to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, the star quarterback is in the "pole position" to lead the Browns offense when the 2026 season kicks off.
And if Watson does get the nod, the Browns will be fielding what many believe is the best QB room in the entire NFL. That's not hyperbole — that's the reality of the talent Cleveland has assembled.
The Pole Position Advantage
Being in "pole position" means Watson has the inside track. He's the guy the team is planning for, the guy they expect to be under center when the lights come on in Week 1. Of course, things can change — injuries happen, competition in training camp can shake things up, or coaching decisions could shift. But right now, Watson is the frontrunner.

The Best QB Room in Football
What makes this even more interesting is that the Browns have assembled legitimately elite quarterback depth. Between Watson and the rest of their QB room, Cleveland can confidently say they have options. Premium depth at the position is rare in the NFL — most teams would trade their entire roster for a backup QB as good as some of the Browns' options.
This kind of QB depth gives a team flexibility, optionality, and insurance against the inevitable injury that could derail a season. It's also a statement about the Browns' front office ambitions — they're saying, "We want to win NOW, and we've built a roster that reflects that."
Watson's Journey Back
Watson's path to being the Browns' starter has been complicated. After his suspension ended, there were questions about whether he'd regain his elite form, whether he'd be worth the investment, whether the distraction would linger. But if Garafolo's reporting is accurate, the Browns are all-in on Watson being their franchise QB.
Week 1 will tell us a lot. If Watson comes out firing and the Browns start strong, we could be looking at a legitimate Super Bowl contender. If there are rust issues or inconsistency, the QB room depth becomes crucial.
