Ducks Eliminate Defending Conference Champion Oilers, Punch Ticket to Second Round

Anaheim just took down Edmonton in Game 6 and sent the defending conference champions packing. The Ducks are moving on to the second round after finishing off the Oilers, and the first round is officially among the closest in NHL history.

Ducks Close It Out

The Oilers came in as the defending conference champions, but Anaheim had other plans. The Ducks controlled Game 6 and secured the series victory, earning their spot in the second round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Terry and Carlsson combined to build a 4-1 lead for the Ducks, while Kreider added a goal to push the advantage even further. Gauthier also chipped in with a power-play goal in the first period, putting the Oilers in an early hole they couldn't climb out of.

Wild and Avalanche Advance Too

It wasn't just the Ducks moving on. Dallas and Minnesota went the distance in their series, with Hughes delivering the winner in the third period as Minnesota eliminated the Stars. Hughes, who scored twice in Game 6, proved to be a difference-maker down the stretch. The Avalanche, meanwhile, are awaiting their second-round opponent after finishing the first round.

Historic First Round

This first round has been one for the record books. The 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs first round is among the closest in NHL history, with multiple series going the distance and teams refusing to go quietly. Whether it was overtime thrillers, power-play goals, or Game 6 clinchers, this opening round delivered drama at every turn.

The second round is set to begin soon, and the remaining teams are hungry to keep their runs alive. The Ducks will look to maintain their momentum as they face their next opponent in what promises to be another battle.
