Fernando Mendoza Getting No. 15 With Tom Flores' Blessing, and That Number Means Everything

The Raiders' top overall draft pick just locked in his jersey number, and it didn't come without a stamp of approval from one of the greatest coaches in franchise history. Fernando Mendoza will wear No. 15 for Las Vegas, and Hall of Famer Tom Flores, the two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach of the Raiders, gave his blessing for the selection.

A Number Steeped in Raiders History

You don't just pick a jersey number in the NFL without understanding the weight it carries. For Mendoza, a guy drafted first overall to rebuild a franchise, choosing No. 15 isn't just about what feels right on his back. It's about stepping into a legacy that matters. The fact that Flores, a man who won two Super Bowls as the Raiders head coach and has his fingerprints all over the most successful eras in team history, signed off on this move tells you everything you need to know about how seriously the organization takes continuity and respect for the past.

Setting the Tone for a New Era

When you're the top pick in the draft, every decision becomes symbolic. Mendoza's number choice, backed by one of the franchise's all-time greats, sends a message to the locker room: this isn't just a kid trying to make it in the league. This is a quarterback who understands the responsibility of wearing Raiders black and silver. Flores wouldn't cosign just any choice. His blessing matters because he's seen what it takes to win championships in this organization.

Mendoza's got the jersey locked down. Now comes the hard part: living up to the No. 15.
