Fernando Mendoza Is Gone in Round 1 and the Raiders Just Changed Everything About Their Quarterback Future

The 2026 NFL draft kicked off Thursday night in Pittsburgh, and the Las Vegas Raiders didn't waste any time. They took former Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick, signaling a major shift in their offensive direction heading into the new season.

Mendoza wasted no time celebrating the moment either. The rookie posted on LinkedIn after being selected, embracing the weight of the opportunity in front of him. When you're the first name called in the entire draft, you know the organization is betting big on you to turn things around.

What the Raiders Are Asking of Their New Signal Caller

The pressure on Mendoza in Year 1 is real. Executives around the league are asking what the Raiders can actually do to set their young QB up for success from day one. That's not just talk either. In a league where rookie quarterback performances can make or break a franchise's next five years, every decision matters.

The Raiders clearly believe Mendoza has the tools to be a franchise cornerstone. Now it's about surrounding him with the right supporting cast and gameplan to let him grow into the role.

Round 2 and 3 Action Keeps the Draft Moving

The festivities in Pittsburgh continued Friday with Rounds 2 and 3 bringing plenty of activity around the league. Teams kept making moves, hunting for value, and trying to find steals after the first night's marquee selections wrapped up.

The 2026 draft class is already making waves. Mendoza's selection sets the tone for what should be a dynamic few years for the Raiders organization. The question now is whether the pieces around him fall into place the way Las Vegas hopes.
