Fernando Mendoza to Raiders with No. 1 Pick: The Heisman Winner Vegas Has Been Waiting For

It's official. Fernando Mendoza, the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner, is heading to Las Vegas with the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and Raiders fans are ready to believe again. This wasn't a surprise move, it was a virtual lock from the moment Mendoza put on that Heisman, and the Silver and Black didn't hesitate to make it happen.

The Perfect Resume

Mendoza led Indiana to a perfect 16-0 season and a national championship as a redshirt junior, putting up the kind of numbers that make scouts lose their minds. No quarterback in the past 100 years has played more games in a single season for the evaluation process to work with than Mendoza did in 2025. That's not hyperbole, that's the track record. He dominated the Heisman voting too, racking up 643 first-place votes compared to 191 for runner-up Diego Pavia of Vanderbilt. When you win that decisively, you're not just the best college quarterback that year, you're the guy franchises build around.

Raiders Make the Obvious Call

Las Vegas hasn't had a playoff win since January 19, 2003, when they won the AFC Championship game. That's 23 years of pain. That's generations of fans who've never seen their team win in the postseason. Handing Mendoza the keys to the offense isn't just about this draft pick, it's about finally turning the page on one of the bleakest stretches in franchise history. Raiders fans are hungry, and they're ready to ride with a quarterback who just proved he can win at the highest level.

The move makes sense on paper, but what matters more is whether Mendoza can deliver the same magic in Vegas that he did in Indiana. That's the real test ahead.
