Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback Geno Smith and his team have reportedly approached the franchise about a new contract extension, per NFL Insider Mike Garafolo.
Last March, the Seattle Seahawks signed QB Geno Smith to a three-year extension that included a base value of $25 million per season, with $40 million fully guaranteed at signing. Just 17 months later, with this season and next season left one the contract, he reportedly wants a new contract.
He is 33 years old, and going to turn 34 in October. Despite his age, Geno Smith has a lot mileage on his body compared to others his age. He was a backup for basically 80% of his career until the last two seasons.
Garafolo spoke about this situation on Jason Puckett’s podcast:
“They’ve talked about it, they’ve tried to talk about it, I know that,” Garolo stated, in regards to Smith and his team. “That’s been something that’s been broached this offseason. So you know, (that) could be something that gets done before week 1 and is addressed by the team.”
“It didn’t seem like it was imminent on their (Seattle’s) part,” Garafolo continued.
After a career year in which Smith completed a league-leading 69.8% of his passes for 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2022 while going 9-8 as the starter with a playoff berth, Smith threw for 3,624 yards, 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2023 while going 8-7. He made the Pro Bowl in both seasons.
