George Pickens Is Playing on the Franchise Tag and Dallas Just Made It Official

The Dallas Cowboys aren't budging. Stephen Jones, the team's executive vice president, made it crystal clear last week: there will be no long-term contract negotiations with George Pickens. The message went straight to Pickens' agent, David Mulugheta, and it's final. The Cowboys slapped a nonexclusive franchise tag worth $27.3 million on Pickens back in March, and that's exactly what he's going to play under this season.

The Tag and Nothing More

This is a bold move by Dallas. Any extension would have needed to get done by July 15, and the Cowboys just made it clear that deadline is meaningless to them. They're not even going to negotiate. Pickens is locked in for 2026 on the franchise tag, period. It's a stark position from a team that clearly isn't interested in giving their star receiver a massive payday right now.

How Rare Is This?

Here's the thing that tells you how serious the Cowboys are: the last time Dallas actually signed a first-time franchise-tagged player to an extension was back in 2015 when they locked down Dez Bryant. That's over a decade ago. The message? The Cowboys have made this decision before, and they stuck with it. They're not in the business of caving to tag situations anymore.

Pickens will suit up for the Cowboys in 2026 on the nonexclusive franchise tag. No long-term deal. No extension talks. No handshake agreements. Just the $27.3 million and one season at a time.
