Georgia's Edge Rusher Amaris Williams Done for Extended Time After Noncontact Knee Injury

Georgia football just took a major hit to its defensive line. Edge rusher Amaris Williams suffered a noncontact knee injury during Saturday's G-Day spring scrimmage and is expected to miss extended time, head coach Kirby Smart confirmed. The transfer from Auburn won't play anytime soon, and Smart wouldn't put a number on it.

"I don't know how long he's out," Smart said. "You never know how long it is with the ACL."

No Timetable, But a Path Forward

Williams, who played in 14 games for Auburn last season with nine tackles and two sacks, is one of Georgia's nine transfers this year. Smart pointed to wide receiver George Pickens as a recovery blueprint. Pickens tore his ACL during a noncontact spring drill in his sophomore year at Georgia but made an accelerated recovery and returned roughly eight months later to play in the Bulldogs' final four games, including the 2022 national championship game.

Still, Smart was cautious about predicting Williams' timeline. "He doesn't want to put a timetable on it," the coach explained. "He wants to do what he can to recover and get better."

This isn't Williams' first brush with spring practice injuries at Georgia. Smart revealed he has witnessed seven to nine ACL tears during his 11 years in Athens, and all but one have been noncontact.

Other Injury Concerns on the Mend

The Bulldogs dodged a bigger bullet with running back Nate Frazier, who limped off the field after one carry but avoided serious damage. Smart said the decision to keep him out of the rest of the game was precautionary. Frazier had an ankle issue from the previous game and reaggravated it on his first snap.

Demello Jones also went down with a soft tissue hamstring injury during spring drills, though Smart didn't express serious concern. Raylen Wilson was shut down after a knee issue bothered him throughout spring practice.
