Netflix Is Taking the NFL to Australia and Football Will Never Be the Same

Netflix is going global with football. The streaming giant will broadcast the first ever NFL game from Australia in September, and it's going to be massive. The Los Angeles Rams will take on the San Francisco 49ers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday, Sept. 10, with the Rams as the home team. Kickoff is set for 8:35 p.m. ET, which means it'll be Friday morning for anyone watching live in Melbourne.

This Is Bigger Than Just One Game

Netflix didn't stop at one international showcase. According to multiple reports, the streaming service also landed rights to broadcast a Thanksgiving-week game. On top of that, Netflix will air two games on Christmas Day. This is part of a massive shift in how we consume football. Back in March, the Wall Street Journal reported that Netflix was negotiating for exactly this: an international game, a Thanksgiving-week matchup, and the Christmas slate. They got all three.

How to Watch the Australia Game

Here's the catch: if you're outside Los Angeles or San Francisco, you'll need a Netflix subscription to catch the Rams-49ers game. If you're in LA or SF, there's an over-the-air TV option available. So depending on where you live, your game plan changes.

This is the future of football broadcasting. Netflix is betting big that international audiences and streaming-first viewers are worth the investment. The Australia game kicks things off in September, followed by that Thanksgiving game and the Christmas matchups. It's a bold move that signals where the NFL is headed.
