Richland Bombers Hire 27-Year-Old Will Burghardt, and the Rest of Class 4A Should Be Terrified

Alright Emerald City hoops fans, buckle UP! The Richland Bombers, our state's undisputed kings of the court, just dropped some massive news that's gonna send shockwaves through Washington high school basketball. They've officially tapped Will Burghardt as their new head coach, and get this: the dude is only 27 years old! You heard that right. The team that just went undefeated and snatched a state title is bringing in the youngest head coach in program history. Talk about a statement move, huh?

The Youngest Gun in the West

Let's talk about Burghardt, because this guy is a total phenom. At just 27, he's not only taking the reins of the state's No. 1 ranked team, but he's also now the youngest head coach in the entire Richland boys basketball program's long, storied history. We're talking about a program that's only had six other head coaches since 1947, and 30 total in its history! So, this isn't some fly-by-night appointment. Burghardt isn't new to leading a squad though. He's coming off three seasons as the head coach for Newport (OR) boys basketball, where he absolutely crushed it with an overall record of 49-24. In his final season, he led the Cubs to an impressive 19-5 record and a deep, deep playoff run in the OHSAA. This kid knows how to win, plain and simple.

Bombers Built Different, Ready for More

Now, let's not forget who Burghardt is inheriting here. This isn't just any team, folks. We're talking about the Richland Bombers, the absolute juggernauts of Washington high school hoops from the 2025-26 season. They didn't just win, they dominated. We're talking a perfect 28-0 record, finishing the season ranked No. 1 according to the final Washington 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings. And yeah, they capped off that flawless season by taking home the Class 4A state championship, beating Gonzaga Prep 63-49. That's four straight seasons with 20-plus wins, by the way. So, the foundation is solid gold. The Bombers are already a machine, and now they've brought in a young, hungry coach with a proven winning record to keep that train rolling. The pressure is on, but the potential is through the roof! So, what does this all mean for our beloved Washington high school basketball scene? Well, it means the Richland Bombers are not resting on their laurels, not even for a second. With Burghardt now at the helm, the target on their back just got even bigger. Every team in Class 4A is gonna be gunning for them, trying to be the one to knock them off their perch. Can this young coach keep the undefeated streak alive? Can he build on that state title? We're all gonna be glued to the Rivals High School Scoreboard, counting down the days until next season kicks off. Get ready for some serious Bombers basketball, folks, because it's about to get wild in the Evergreen State!
