Richland Hires 27-Year-Old Will Burghardt, And Washington's Top Team Isn't Messing Around

Alright, Emerald City, listen up! You know how we bleed green and blue for our pro teams, but sometimes, you gotta tip your cap to what's happening at the high school level, especially when it's just plain *wild*. The Richland Bombers, the undisputed kings of Washington high school basketball last season, just dropped a bombshell that should have every other team in the state rethinking their strategy. They've hired Will Burghardt as their new head coach, and get this: the dude is only 27 years old! Yeah, you read that right. Twenty-seven!

The Young Gun Taking Over WA's Best

So, who is this guy taking the reins of the state's No. 1 ranked team? Will Burghardt is officially the youngest head coach in Richland boys basketball history, stepping into a program that has seen 30 head coaches overall since 1947, with Burghardt being only the seventh since 1947. This isn't some fresh-out-of-college kid, though. He's coming off a three-season run as the head coach at Newport (OR), where he put up a solid 49-24 overall record. In his final season leading the Cubs, Burghardt guided them to an impressive 19-5 record and a deep playoff run in the OHSAA. That's a serious resume for a 27-year-old, showing he knows how to win and navigate the pressures of high-stakes basketball. Richland isn't just picking a young face; they're picking a proven winner with serious upside.

Richland's Reign: Can It Get Even Better?

Let's not forget who Burghardt is taking over. The Richland Bombers finished their 2025-26 season with a perfect, absolutely flawless 28-0 record. Twenty-eight wins, zero losses! They capped off that incredible run by absolutely dominating Gonzaga Prep, 63-49, to snatch the Class 4A state championship. According to the final Washington 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings, they were deservedly ranked No. 1 in the state. And this wasn't a one-off fluke; this squad has now strung together four consecutive seasons with 20 or more wins. That kind of consistent excellence is mind-blowing. The question isn't if they're good; it's whether this bold move with a young, energetic coach can somehow elevate them *even further*. This hire signals that Richland isn't just resting on their laurels, they're hungry for more. What does this mean for the rest of Washington? It means the Bombers are coming back with a fresh perspective, a coach who's ready to prove himself on the biggest stage, and a legacy to uphold. You better believe every other squad in the state is already looking at how they can match this energy. Next season is going to be electric, and all eyes will be on Richland to see if Burghardt can keep that perfect record rolling.
