The Washington Huskies lost to the cross-state rival WSU Cougars in the 116th Apple Cup last Saturday in gut-wrenching fashion. It was a disappointing day to be a fan of the Washington Huskies and the performance raised a lot of questions and lowered expectations for the season. But what WSU head coach Jake Dickert said after the game about the Apple Cup should have fans of UW laughing.
It's hard not to be inspired by Jake Dickert. The ability to recognize the moment's significance even in this emotion is impressive.

Will he really make a new Apple Cup Trophy?#AppleCup @komonews pic.twitter.com/gBSPy89i5s
Jake Dickert said about the trophy: “I think we might retire this trophy,” Dickert said after the Cougs’ 24-19 win Saturday at Lumen Field. “I think it’s a Pac-12 trophy. I think that might stay in our place for a long time. We’ll bring a new one next year (for) the Big Ten (and) Pac-12. We’ll put the new score on it. Absolutely absurd idea.
As a UW alumni, I think the whole jealousy the WSU Cougars have is just something to laugh at. If anyone should have the final trophy, after the total domination in the 116 years of the rivalry, the Huskies would be the ones to deserve it. Either way, I see no reason to end the tradition and the trophy should go to the winner each season.
