Joe Mack Is About to Catch His First Major League Game and the Marlins Are Banking on Youth at a Crucial Position

The Miami Marlins called up 23-year-old catching prospect Joe Mack on Monday, shipping veteran backstop Agustin Ramirez down to Triple-A Jacksonville in the process. It's a straight swap that signals Miami is ready to see what their top catching prospect can do at the big league level, and Mack could make his debut as early as Monday night against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Who Is Joe Mack and Why Should You Care

Mack is a first-round draft pick from 2021 and ranks as Miami's No. 4 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline. The kid has pedigree, the track record in the system, and now he's got his shot. At Triple-A this season, he slashed .244 with three home runs and nine RBIs across 24 games. Those numbers might not jump off the page, but he's got the upside that prompted the Marlins to draft him high in the first place.

Why the Swap Now

Agustin Ramirez, 24, has been the incumbent catcher but his 2026 performance hasn't been compelling enough to keep Miami locked in on him long term. Ramirez is batting .230 with two homers and 14 RBIs in 31 games with the Marlins this season. At some point, you have to see what your prospect can do, and the Marlins decided Monday was the moment. Mack gets the call, Ramirez heads to Jacksonville to keep working.

If Mack suits up against the Phillies in the finale of this four-game set, Seattle fans won't see it directly on the local broadcast, but this is the kind of move that ripples through the league. Young talent getting opportunities, teams making tough personnel calls in May. That's baseball right now.
