Joe Ryan's Nightmare Start: Twins Ace Gone After Nine Pitches, Elbow Screaming

The Minnesota Twins got exactly what they didn't need on Sunday. Their ace Joe Ryan, a right-hander they were counting on to shut down Toronto's bats, lasted nine pitches before heading to the dugout with right elbow soreness. That's it. Nine pitches. One strikeout of leadoff man Yohendrick Pinango, then he was done.

When Your Best Arm Breaks Down

This is the kind of injury that keeps front offices up at night in May. You're not even a month into the season and your ace is dealing with arm trouble. Ryan didn't even make it through the first inning against the Blue Jays. The Twins had to scramble, and suddenly their whole pitching plans for Sunday's game went sideways.

What This Means for the Rotation

The Twins came into Sunday trying to split the series with Toronto. Instead, they lost their best pitcher before he could even warm up properly. That's a swing that goes way beyond one game. Every team dealing with early-season injuries knows the feeling: one guy goes down, and suddenly your depth gets tested earlier than you wanted.

For Minnesota, it's a brutal reminder that baseball doesn't care about your plans. You can have the best ace in the AL, but if his elbow starts barking in the first inning, none of that matters. The Twins will need answers fast on Ryan's status, because right now, they've got a hole at the top of their rotation they weren't expecting to fill.
